PRECIOUS FRAGMENTS 4
In creating precious fragments I’ve been thinking about my archive of letters from correspondence spanning three decades. At one time I would receive a handwritten letter every week. Always beautifully scripted replies responding to questions and comments, enclosing newspaper and magazine cuttings – a delight to read more than once.
Most are stored in boxes but occasionally one will materialise from the back of a bookshelf or drawer and take me time travelling.
It was such a huge loss when the letters stopped and I understood that something of great significance had ended and with it a whole range of small pleasures like that magical flash of air mail red, white and blue when I opened the letterbox.
This style of communication is more than endangered. It is quite possibly extinct.
