Old Dogs Dreaming
A Stitchpoint Print by Kate Hill
OLD DOGS DREAMING
Against a light blue sky old dogs
are dreaming of those years of excess.
Nowadays their owners caress
is more important than bones,
liaisons with cats and up for it hounds. Meanwhile,
golden memories hover about a nose length away.
As clear as if it was only Monday week when they
strutted their stuff.
Lean rangy boys, sniffing at the world
and let it whistle as it may
they would come when they were ready
and only then.
Now the ache in the hind quarter, tremble in the paw,
the worrying contrast between scrawny limbs and thickened body
don’t add up to much.
Except to those who knew them as pups.
