"The old one lane bridge across the Pepe stream in Tairua was built in 1942/3during WW2 to enable military access via SH25 up into the Coromandel. It was never expected to last for 83 years and in recent times has been responsible for major traffic bottlenecks through the town. However it's also provided lots of fun at high tide for those brave enough to use it as a launching pad for jumping into the estuary. Finally its days are over. A new two lane bridge and walkway is due to open in 2027." - Kate Hill
