Peter, born in Nelson, New Zealand, and coming from a line of artists and artisans in Switzerland, Peter was always exposed to art and from college began his last year experimenting with abstract photography. A year later he spent time in a silversmith workshop in Nelson, briefly with Ray Mitchell and a summer school with Jens Hansen and Gavin Hitchins, all prominent Nelson silversmiths.
Photography became the focus and Peter trained in professional photography before a career in technical photography and digital print, for advertising, museums and exhibition. In later times Peter used his professional skills to develop a more abstract range of coloured images digitally printed from originally being photographed in black and white film.
Sculpture always interested Peter, in 2010, he produced a series of colour anodised aluminium sculptures, first exhibited in the Elementa (2010) exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts, Wellington.
In recent years with a move to Whitianga, Peter has returned to jewellery making with a focus on silver rings in a ‘modernist style’. His style sets jewellery on the crossroads between jewellery and sculpture.
Peter has exhibited photography in New Zealand and Japan (Asahi Shinbun Awards Finalist,1984). Photographic works selected as a finalist for the New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Awards (2014 & 2017). A finalist in the 2025 NZ Small Sculpture Award with a two finger ponamu and silver ‘wave ring’.
