Lena McKillop

Lena is a Whangamata based artist who is also a Visual Arts teacher at the local Area School.

She often uses music to draw inspiration for her paintings. Sometimes the vision is clear from the start, other times the process is more organic, and the painting evolves with each brush stroke.

Typically, her works feature young female subjects and exotic birds, often in sparse environments. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Hieronymus Bosch and Dali, her fantasy surrealist work takes on its own narrative. The end results are often quirky in nature and can be read as gloomy or optimistic, depending on the viewer. “I love how my paintings can draw so many emotions and leave the viewer questioning the true meaning behind my work.”
