Jo Cullen is a New Zealand-based abstract and semi-abstract artist living in the coastal town of Whangamatā. Surrounded by ocean, light, and landscape, her work draws strongly on the natural environments of both New Zealand and Italy, where she regularly travels and paints.
Through acrylic washes and textured layering, Jo creates atmospheric compositions that explore memory, stillness and spatial depth. Her paintings balance softness and structure, often featuring quiet horizons and muted tonal palettes that evoke reflection and calm. Her work reflects a love of place, travel, and lived experience, translating memory, landscape, and emotion into expressive contemporary compositions.
Following many years directing her dance studio while raising a family, Jo now focuses on her painting practice with dedicated studio time. Primarily self-taught, she has also developed her work through workshops in New Zealand, France, and Italy, continually refining her technical and expressive approach.
Her original works invite the viewer to pause — to feel rather than simply observe — and to connect with the subtle emotional resonance of landscape.
Her work is held in private collections in New Zealand and Australia, and has been sold both privately and through gallery representation.
