Ashley Crabb graduated from Auckland University with Bachelor of Architecture in 1984 and established his architectural practice in Thames the following year. In 1989 he moved to Auckland.

His interest in 3D abstract art began in 1995 when he designed a stainless steel logo for his Auckland practice.

A couple of years later he began creating exterior works for his courtyard in Milford. He enjoyed the process and the feedback was positive, so he decided to take the ‘dream’ further.

By 2004 his career emphasis had shifted from 80% architecture/20% art to 80% art/20% architecture.

From 2005 to 2008 Ashley worked from a studio in the Lake House Arts Centre, Takapuna.

In 2020 he returned to the Coromandel where he continues to create both interior and exterior 3D wall sculpture.

Inspiration is largely drawn from the natural environment. A prominent theme is ‘masquerade’ based on social interaction. His experience as an architect re light, colour, texture, form, scale, balance etc, has a strong influence on his artwork.

Mediums include: stainless steel, copper, fluorescent acrylic, woven vinyl, acrylic signage board, MDF, cedar, metallic paint and acrylic paint. All exterior artwork is sealed and weather resistant.
